The Work of the British High Commission
The British High Commission represents the interests of the British Government in the Republic of Mozambique. Our job is to inform and influence the Mozambican Government on all matters of common interest to Britain and Mozambique, particularly in respect to bilateral and multilateral co-operation; inform the British Government about Mozambican developments and views; to help British businessmen with contacts in Mozambique; to help the British residents and visitors in Mozambique; and to help Mozambicans wishing to visit Britain.
The High Commissioner and the Deputy High Commissioner
The High Commissioner and the Deputy supervise the work of the High Commission. The High Commissioner, as the public face of the High Commission, represents the interests of the British Government in dealings with Mozambique ministers and officials. The Deputy High Commissioner also supervises daily activities of the office.
The Political Section
This is the channel through which most government-to-government business between Britain and Mozambique is conducted. The High Commissioner and the Deputy are supported by the Vice Consul and three officers: on political issues, on human rights and communications and public relations. This section reports to the British Government on political and economic developments in Mozambique, while seeking to influence the local government’s policies on issues of concern to Britain, globally. We also respond to public enquiries about Britain and provide information to local media and government departments about British policy. It issues press releases and other information about the UK and partnership initiatives with Mozambique.
Defence
Defence related issues are dealt with by the Political Section. It is through this channel that most national defence business is conducted between Britain and Mozambique. The Defence Attaché is based in Pretoria, South Africa, and liaises with the Mozambican Ministry of Defence, the General Staff and the individual armed services on issues related to military co-operation between Britain and Mozambique. The Defence Attaché is supported locally by the Deputy High Commissioner.
Consular Section
The British Consulate is here to look after the interests of British nationals visiting or living in Mozambique. The Consular Section helps British nationals in case of serious accidents, illness, or other incidents. Consular officers visit and advise British nationals who are detained by the authorities, process emergency passport applications, register births and deaths of British nationals occurring in Mozambique. The High Commission also runs an Honorary Consulate in the central city of Beira.
The management section provides logistical support to the High Commission.
