Municipal elections in Mozambique
To demonstrate support for Mozambique’s democracy and to contribute to the legitimacy of the elections, a number of members of the international community in Mozambique asked UNDP to coordinate a mission to observe the Municipal Elections held on 19 November. The mission was made up of members of the international community in Mozambique and worked in accordance with the Regulamento de Observação do Processo Eleitoral.
As required by this regulation, a list of observers provided by each participating mission was sent to the Comissão Nacional de Eleições (CNE), with a request to accredit them for observing in all municipalities.
Everyone on the list got their accreditation in time and on election day eighty-nine international observers were deployed by thirteen Embassies and High Commissions (Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States) and by the Delegation of the European Commission (see annex). All international observers requested and were provided with accreditation to observe throughout the country.
